Hamburger Mecca stages consumption as ritual. A dense spiral of bodies or structures encircles a dark architectural core, evoking pilgrimage, worship, and mass convergence. The familiar language of faith is quietly rerouted through the symbols of contemporary consumer culture, collapsing the sacred and the commercial into a single image.
Made early in the artist’s practice, the work anticipates ongoing concerns with belief systems, collective behavior, and the architectures—physical and psychological—that organize modern life. Neither satire nor sermon, Hamburger Mecca presents a calm, unsettling proposition: that devotion has not disappeared, only changed its object.
